Mission Statement

New Horizons Clubhouse is a safe, supportive, and strength-based community for adults recovering from mental illnesses. Personal growth, empowerment, and independence are fostered through shared work and social opportunities, both at the clubhouse and within the greater community. Voluntary and self- paced, peer-supported and person-centered, we seek to meet members wherever they are at in their lives, and help them on their journey to wherever they hope to go.

Our Story

New Horizons Clubhouse, a program of North Country Community Mental Health, is a psychosocial rehabilitation program for adults recovering from mental illnesses, including depression, PTSD, bi-polar disorder, schizoaffective disorders, and co-occuring substance use disorders. We are accredited through Clubhouse International and CARF. Since opening our doors in June 1994 (originally as Crystal Beach Friendship Center) we have assisted more than 350 individuals in our region as they navigate the challenges of living with a mental illness.

We are one of nearly 40 Clubhouse International Clubhouses accredited in Michigan – and one of more than 370 Clubhouses worldwide – serving eligible residents of Antrim, Kalkaska, and Otsego Counties. Cost-effective Clubhouse programs work in tandem with traditional psychiatric and medical treatments. Multiple studies show that participation in Clubhouse programs improves social functioning, increases employment rates, and reduces anxiety and isolation.

Our program features two work units: a Business & Communications Unit (BCU) and a Culinary Arts Unit (CAU). Members and staff work together in both units on a variety of structured tasks designed to contribute to all facets of operation. This work provides members with a sense of purpose and belonging, facilitates employment and independent living skills, and helps build supportive relationships, all of which serve to enhance physical and mental wellbeing of participants.

Clubhouse members have an active voice in establishing policies and procedures, planning activities, and organizing our “work-ordered” day. In addition, the Clubhouse community supports members as they enter or return to the workforce, pursue educational goals, participate in social/recreational activities and improve health through Clubhouse wellness initiatives.
